Don Jones, who led the Jacksonville, Fla.-based American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists for 20 years, died June 22 from a brain tumor, the Florida Times-Union reported. He was 75.
Jones retired in May as CEO of $16.5-million revenue AACE, which he led since 1997. He previously was executive director and CEO of the Florida Medical Association, where he spent the first 29 years of his career.
In the announcement of his retirement, AACE credited Jones with growing the group from 2,600 members when he started to more than 7,500 members. He also helped initiate and expand AACE's scientific programs and activities and its affiliated educational organization, including the for-profit subsidiary, AACECORP.
Paul Markowski succeeded Jones in May. ACCE also launched the Donald C. Jones Leadership and Endocrine Excellence Award program in honor of its former CEO.
Jones was one of the passengers on the "Miracle on the Hudson" airliner that crashed into the Hudson River in New York City in 2009. The events of the incident were dramatized in the 2016 movie "Sully." http://bit.ly/2w0gbBR
